Legend says this dance originated on a cold winters Sunday outside a church in the village of Tulloch, while the congregation waited for the Minister to let them into the church. To keep warm they began to stamp their feet and clap their hands, and when someone started to whistle a highland tune, the whole group developed into a lively dance.
The reel is the closest highland dance to social dancing, performed in groups of four. There are a number of different reels used in Highland Dancing; The Hullachan, The Strathspey & Highland Reel and The Strathspey & Half Tulloch are just some of the reels seen in competitions.
